Lights Out - Week 2

Week 2 Recap:

Rest That Reveals Trust

Introduction

Sleep is one of the clearest reminders that we are not in control. Each night, when the lights go out, we surrender. Our bodies shut down, our minds drift, and we trust that we will wake again. In the same way, God gives rest — not just physical sleep, but a spiritual rhythm that teaches us dependence. Psalm 121 reminds us that God never slumbers, and that truth changes the way we live, trust, and rest.

God Never Sleeps:

Psalm 121 declares, “The protector of Israel does not slumber or sleep.” Unlike false gods that demand constant sacrifice, the true God is always awake, always present, and always watching over His people. He doesn’t nod off, and He doesn’t take breaks. This reality frees us from the anxiety of having to hold the world together on our own.

Rest Requires Release:

Rest is not just about stopping activity — it’s about letting go. To truly rest, we must release our grip on control, our constant striving, and our anxious need to prove ourselves. Trusting God enough to rest means believing that He will protect, provide, and carry us even when we stop working.

Rest Strengthens Our Witness:

When we choose to rest, we declare to the world that God is trustworthy. Rest becomes a testimony. Instead of living under constant pressure, we show that our confidence is not in money, achievement, or status, but in the God who sustains us. Our rest is not laziness — it’s faith on display.

Rest Declares Trust:

Every time we sleep, we practice trust. We close our eyes, knowing we are vulnerable, and yet we believe we will wake up because God holds us. The same is true spiritually: resting in Him declares that we believe His promises. Where we refuse to rest, we reveal where trust is missing. Anxiety, fear, and relentless striving often signal deeper unbelief.

Rest Is Found in Christ:

At the heart of true rest is Jesus. He is the one who proves that God is faithful, the one who faced temptation yet never sinned, and the one who gives mercy and grace when we fall short. To rest in Him is to trust that His strength is enough, His love is constant, and His provision never fails.

Closing:

Psalm 121 reminds us that real rest is not simply physical sleep but a spiritual act of trust. God never slumbers, so we can lay down our worries. He protects, provides, and sustains even when we let go. The invitation is simple but profound: rest, because He is awake. Trust, because He is faithful.
