A Life Well Played - Week 2

Week 2 Recap:

A Life Well Played: Use the Platform God Has Given You

Introduction

Every game of chess has a structure. Each piece has a purpose, each move matters, and the game only works when the pieces operate within the rules of the board. In the same way, God creates order and authority for a purpose. Romans 13 reminds us that authority is not simply something to resist or resent. It can be a means of protection, order, and opportunity. As followers of Christ, we are called to live faithfully within the systems around us while remembering that God remains our ultimate authority.

God Creates Order for a Purpose

The world can quickly become chaotic when there is no order. Romans 13 teaches that governing authorities exist under God's sovereignty and that authority has a purpose. This does not mean every government or leader is perfect. History clearly shows that human institutions can be deeply flawed. Yet God can still work through imperfect systems to provide order and protection. Instead of automatically viewing authority as an enemy, we can recognize that God uses structures of authority to restrain chaos and create stability.

Our Ultimate Loyalty Is to God

Submitting to earthly authority does not mean placing government above God. God remains the ultimate authority, and every earthly system exists under His sovereignty. Jesus demonstrates this through His own willingness to submit to earthly authority, even when that authority ultimately leads to His crucifixion. His mission is not to establish an earthly political kingdom. His mission is reconciliation with God. Our hope therefore cannot rest in a government, political party, leader, or system. Our hope rests in our relationship with the God of the universe.

Obedience Comes From Conscience, Not Fear

Romans 13 calls us to submit not merely because of consequences, but because of conscience. When God transforms our lives, He also transforms the way we see the world and the way we respond to authority. Obedience becomes more than avoiding punishment. It becomes an expression of faithfulness to God. We respect those who deserve respect, honor those who deserve honor, and fulfill our obligations because we understand that our lives are ultimately accountable to Him.

Work Within the System

The rook provides a powerful picture of what it means to work within a system. On its own, the rook has limitations, but when it operates according to the rules of chess, it becomes one of the most powerful pieces on the board. In the same way, we can have tremendous influence when we work faithfully within the places God has given us. We do not have to withdraw simply because an institution is imperfect. God can place us inside those systems so that we can bring His truth, love, and influence into them.

Use the Platform God Gives You

God places each of us exactly where we are for a purpose. The question is not simply whether we like our circumstances. The question is what we are doing with the opportunities we have been given. We have freedoms, resources, relationships, workplaces, communities, and platforms that allow us to influence the people around us. Instead of constantly focusing on what we cannot do, we can recognize what God has already placed within our reach. A life well lived is not one without authority or responsibility. It is one that uses what God gives us for His glory.

Closing

God has placed us here for a purpose. We may wish our circumstances were different, our government were different, or our opportunities were different, but God calls us to be faithful right where we are. Instead of blaming the world for what we cannot do, we can look for the opportunities God has already provided. We can love our neighbors, serve the people around us, speak about Christ, and become active participants in God's kingdom. The challenge is simple: stop waiting for the perfect circumstances and start using the platform God has already given you.
