Week 3 Recap:
The Obedient Son
Introduction
As we continue through the Unveiled series, we see how Jesus reveals God's plan of redemption and becomes the fulfillment of the promise woven throughout Scripture. While humanity struggles with sin, temptation, and disobedience, Jesus stands as the one who remains faithful to the will of the Father. His life reveals not only who He is, but also why we need Him and how we can learn to trust God through every struggle.
The Need for a Savior
From the beginning, humanity struggles with obedience. Adam and Eve reject God's command in the garden, and sin enters the world. That same struggle continues in our lives as we wrestle with our own desires, pride, and rebellion. None of us can consistently live according to God's will through our own strength. We need someone who can stand where we fall, and Jesus becomes the fulfillment of that need. As both fully human and fully divine, He takes on the role of the Savior who bridges the gap between sin and God.
Loved Before We Accomplish Anything
At Jesus' baptism, the Father declares, "You are my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." This declaration comes before Jesus performs miracles, faces trials, or accomplishes anything publicly. His identity and the Father's love are not dependent on His achievements. This reminds us that our identity as God's children is not based on our performance. Even when sin brings guilt and shame, God's love remains. We do not earn His love by being good, and our failures do not erase our place in His family.
Standing Firm Against Temptation
Immediately after His baptism, Jesus enters the wilderness and faces temptation from Satan. He experiences hunger, pressure, and the challenge of choosing between His own desires and the Father's will. Each temptation presents a different shortcut, whether it is satisfying an immediate need, forcing God to act, or gaining power without sacrifice. Jesus responds by trusting God's Word and refusing to turn away from obedience. His example reminds us that temptation is an ongoing part of life, but we can rely on God rather than our own strength. Whether we stand or fall, His love remains, and His grace calls us back to Him.
Trusting God's Way Instead of Taking Shortcuts
The temptations Jesus faces reveal struggles that are familiar to us. We may feel entitled to what we want, try to force God to act on our terms, or choose a shortcut to avoid difficulty. Yet following God requires trust, even when obedience involves sacrifice or uncertainty. Jesus consistently chooses the Father's way rather than pursuing fame, influence, comfort, or immediate reward. His obedience demonstrates that God's blessing is found in alignment with His will, not in simply achieving what the world considers success.
Relying on Jesus Through Continual Repentance
We cannot duplicate Jesus' perfect obedience through our own strength. We continue to struggle with sin, and we need God's forgiveness and help throughout our lives. Continual repentance and confession keep us aligned with Him, reminding us that we depend on Jesus rather than our own goodness. Through the Holy Spirit, God's Word, and the church, we receive encouragement and strength to keep growing. As adopted sons and daughters of God, we are invited to rely on Jesus, trust His work, and live in the joy of a life surrendered to the Father.
Closing
Jesus reveals what it means to live in complete obedience to God. He stands firm where humanity falls, remains faithful through temptation, and ultimately surrenders to the Father's will, even when the path leads to the cross. We do not have to face our struggles alone or depend on our own righteousness. Through Jesus, we receive forgiveness, mercy, and the opportunity to walk in relationship with God. As we continually confess, trust, and surrender, we learn to align our lives with His will and discover the deep joy that comes from belonging to Him.
