Week 7 Recap:
The Crimson Cross
Introduction
The cross is more than a symbol of faith or a reminder of a tragic moment in history. It reveals the depth of God's love and the incredible cost of our redemption. Throughout Scripture, God continues to reveal His plan to restore humanity and bring people back into His presence. In Jesus Christ, that plan comes into focus. His death on the cross provides the answer to humanity's brokenness and opens the way to a restored relationship with God.
The Cost of Sin
Sin creates separation between humanity and God. Often, we describe our choices as mistakes, personal preferences, or simply the way we are, but the consequences are difficult to ignore. Broken relationships, dysfunctional families, lingering hurts, and repeated patterns of destructive behavior reveal the cost of choosing our own way. No matter how hard we try to improve ourselves, we cannot break this cycle through our own strength alone. We need something greater than our own efforts to bring lasting change.
Jesus Takes Our Place
Matthew 27 describes the darkness that covers the land as Jesus hangs on the cross. In that moment, we see the weight of His suffering as He bears the sins of humanity. Jesus willingly gives Himself to accomplish what we could never accomplish on our own. His sacrifice is not an accident or simply a tragic ending. It is God's plan to restore what sin has separated. The cross reveals both the seriousness of our sin and the immeasurable love of the One who gives His life to redeem us.
The Veil Is Torn
When Jesus dies, the curtain of the temple tears in two from top to bottom. For generations, this curtain represents the separation between God's holy presence and humanity. Its tearing marks a dramatic change. Through the death of Jesus, the barrier is removed, and a new way into God's presence is opened. We no longer have to make ourselves perfect before approaching Him. We can come honestly, carrying our struggles, wounds, failures, and brokenness, trusting that Jesus has already paid the price for our redemption. His sacrifice provides lasting forgiveness and the opportunity for a new relationship with God.
Believing Jesus Is the Son of God
As the events surrounding the crucifixion unfold, a Roman centurion and those watching with him witness the darkness, the earthquake, and everything that takes place. Their response is a powerful declaration: Jesus truly is the Son of God. This moment challenges us to consider who Jesus really is. It is possible to admire Him as a teacher, appreciate His wisdom, and find value in His teachings without fully recognizing Him as the Son of God who came to save us. Lasting transformation begins when we believe in Jesus, trust in His death and resurrection, and surrender our lives to Him.
The Power of Our Testimony
Matthew also highlights the women who witness Jesus' crucifixion. These women later become among the first to discover the empty tomb and share the news of His resurrection. Their testimony reminds us that the story of Jesus is meant to be shared, regardless of who we are or whether we think others will listen. When we tell people how God has worked in our lives, our experiences become a powerful witness to His grace. Sharing our faith does more than encourage others. It also reminds us of what we believe and strengthens our commitment to follow Jesus. Our testimony can bring hope to people living in darkness and point them toward the God who has made a way for them to come home.
Closing
The cross reveals the heart of God's plan to rescue and restore humanity. Jesus bears the weight of sin, tears down the barrier between God and humanity, and offers forgiveness through His sacrifice. Our response begins with a personal decision to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and to trust Him with our lives. We do not have to remain trapped by our past, our failures, or the pain we carry. Through Jesus, we find forgiveness, freedom, and a new foundation for living. As we continue to grow in our relationship with Him, may we also share the hope we have found so that others can discover the life changing grace of God.
